This is a perfect Shiwan mud man known as "The Writer" with celadon glaze sitting on an exquisite dripped glaze rock.
Mudmen were brightly glazed figurines of women, wise men and old sages, sometimes fishing, seated or standing, holding flutes, scrolls, pots, fish and other objects of mystical importance.
This mud man is unmarked so it was likely not made for export but rather may have been sold in a village by a tourist or missionary. I cannot say for certain its age, but my research is leading me to believe the 1920s. But please do not rely on that.
The thing that separates these figurines from the ordinary, is that they were made individually by hand. It has been suggested this was a _ÑÉcottage industry_Ñé involving nearly every member of the village in the production of these oriental curios. As the story goes, when the harvesting of rice was complete and the dry season had set in, the villagers turned to figurine production as a means of establishing a vigorous economy. Each part of the process was done by a different individual so each piece was a group effort and not just one artist. One person would form the figurine, another would add the glaze and decoration etc.
Made in China.
No chips, cracks or crazing.
My goal is to help discarded cool stuff to find new homes with a new generation. So please be mindful that the pieces in my store have had a previous life and are not perfect. I do my best to point out every little nick and blemish they have endured over the decades. Please take the time to review the pictures. If you have any questions, use Etsy conversation.
